Table Talk with Tawnie
Are air fryer sweet potatoes a brand-new concept for 2026? Absolutely not 🤣 But they have been on repeat in my house so much, I have to share them with you; I just love them so much! Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside…and they have this candy-like sweetness in every bite. Truly so easy to make with very little thinking involved (Can I get an amen?!) I like to make them with skin on or off. If I am feeling lazy and not in the peeling mood, I love having that skin-on option. Serve them with eggs in the morning, tossed in salads, or in my Mediterranean Ground Beef Sweet Potato Bowls with hot honey on top. GAME CHANGER!

- Sweet potatoes: I like to peel them and cut them into small cubes. However, you can also leave the skin on if you prefer.
- Olive oil: Use your favorite olive oil for roasting (check out my Instagram where I’m currently testing & reviewing 30+ olive oils). You could also use avocado oil or your favorite cooking oil.
- Salt + pepper: I like to keep the seasonings simple, but you can, of course, change them based on what you’re eating or craving. Try adding different seasonings, such as paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, and cumin.

Expert Tips
- Skin on or off: If I have the time, I like to peel the skin off (however, you can always leave it on it you’re short on time or just prefer them that way).
- Cut evenly: Try to cut the pieces evenly, so they cook at the same rate. I also love to use this chopper (larger dice setting) to quickly cube up a bunch of sweet potatoes!
- Don’t overcrowd: This is KEY for crispiness! I know it’s a little annoying to cook in batches, but we want those crispy little cubes!
- Shake halfway through: Shaking the air fryer basket halfway through cooking helps to ensure even browning for all the little bites!
- Oven option: Don’t have an air fryer? No problem! Roast the sweet potatoes at 425°F for ~25-35 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until the potatoes are fork-tender and caramelized.
- Meal prep: Feel free to double or triple this recipe if you want to make sweet potatoes all week for your meal prep! They’re SO easy and good and you can really add them to just about anything!
Can I use this method for different kinds of sweet potatoes?
Yes, you can use this air fryer method for purple or white sweet potatoes (you may just need to tweak the cooking time a bit)!
-
- Purple sweet potatoes are typically denser and a bit drier than orange ones, so they may need an extra 2–4 minutes in the air fryer to become fully tender. Tossing them with a little extra oil can also help improve texture and prevent them from drying out.
-
- White sweet potatoes are slightly less sweet and a bit firmer, but they air fry beautifully. They usually cook in about the same time as orange sweet potatoes, though you may want to cut them slightly smaller to ensure even cooking.

Storage / Freezing
- Storage: Store any leftover sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheat: Reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes to bring back their crispy edges. You can also reheat in the microwave for 1–2 minutes, though they will be softer.
- Freezing is not recommended, as the texture can become mushy once thawed.
