What You’ll Need to Make These Teriyaki Steak Bites
For the ingredient measurements and entire recipe, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the blog post where the recipe card is located.
- Sirloin steak: Sirloin is a great choice because when cooked low and slow it becomes juicy and tender. Other meats that you can use are stew meat, round steak, chuck roast or even a flat iron steak.
- Sesame oil: just a regular sesame oil works great. I like to think of toasted sesame oil as a finishing oil since it already has a developed flavor.
- Pineapple juice: The pineapple juice helps to sweeten the teriyaki sauce but is also great for tenderizing the meat as it cooks.
- Garlic: use fresh if you can, but a jarred minced garlic works fine, too!
- Ginger: use fresh if you can, but a jarred minced works fine, too!
- Soy sauce: If you need to make your teriyaki sauce gluten free, use tamari sauce instead of soy sauce.
- Brown sugar: brown sugar adds the classic sweetness to teriyaki sauce we all know and love and helps build the depth of flavor. The brown sugar and the pineapple juice work together to make a perfectly sweet sauce.
- Other ingredients needed: black pepper, sesame seeds, cornstarch, green onions
How to Make Teriyaki Steak Bites
For the full recipe instructions, scroll down to the bottom of the blog post to the recipe card.
- Set the steak out at least 30 minutes before cutting into pieces.
- In a liquid measuring cup, whisk together all ingredients for the sauce and set aside.
- Then, cut the sirloin into bite sized pieces. Place sirloin pieces in the bottom of a crock pot followed by the sauce all over the top.
- Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 6-7 hours. Stir every hour or so.
- The sauce will be thin. If you like it that way, perfect! If you’d like to thicken it (which I recommend), carefully pour the sauce through a fine mesh sieve and then pour the strained sauce in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Mix the cornstarch and water together and whisk it into the sauce until it thickens.
- Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Enjoy as is or serve with rice and your veggie of choice! I like broccoli, asparagus or a green salad.
Tips and Variations
- The sauce will be thin. If you like it that way, perfect! If you’d like to thicken it, pour the sauce in a small saucepan on the stove and bring it to a simmer, mix 2 Tbsp. corn starch and 1/4 cup water together and whisk it into the sauce until it thickens.
- Garnish with green onions and more sesame seeds. Enjoy as is or serve with rice and your veggie of choice! I like broccoli, asparagus or a green salad.
- Customize it!: Add in bell peppers and onions into the crock pot too while the steak cooks.
- When properly stored in the fridge, these steak bites will last for 3-4 days. They are great for meal prepping or when planning out your meals.
- I like to use sirloin for this recipe since the meat is so tender, but you can also use stew meat, round steak, chuck roast or even a flat iron steak.
- You can also pound the steak to 1/8 inch in thickness and slice it, instead of cubes and cook as directed

I’m a less-steps-in-the-process kind of girl. So I’m wondering if it would work to just mix the cornstarch and water in a saucepan. Then pour that directly into the crockpot slowly, stirring quickly. I have another recipe I make that calls for something similar to what I just described. What are your thoughts?
You could try! I’ve just always liked straining it and making it on the stove, sometimes I feel like my slow cooker doesn’t make the sauce in the consistency I prefer.
Okay this was so so yummy! I definitely plan to make this again! I decided to ladle out as much of the liquid as I could because I didn’t want the mess of pouring it out of the crockpot. I thickened it in the pan, added it back in and turned the crockpot on high. It thickened the rest of the sauce enough for my liking. Thanks for this wonderful recipe!
So glad it worked out ๐ thank you soo much!!
Can I use a bottle of teriyaki? Maybe even with a little extra pineapple juice? And if so, how much do you suggest putting in the crockpot?
totally! Just enough to cover the meat should be good and maybe 1/2 cup pineapple juice! lmk how it goes ๐
I have made this a few times now and family and friends love it every timeโฆ Thank you..
I made this recipe tonight, but I used chicken tenders instead of the steak and it turned out great. The whole family loved it. Thanks for the recipe!
I love that you used chicken, I need to try that next time! Thank you ๐
This recipe looks yummy, but your instructions do not match up? The video, formal recipe at the bottom, and the instructions above are all different with different ingredients and cooking times. Which set of instructions are accurate?
Hello! So sorry. This recipe has been revised and is currently in the process of being updated. But the recipe card is the new and improved recipe to follow. Low 6-7 hours and stirring ~ every hour.
How much water and honey? You show both in the photo and actual post, but neither in the actual recipe…
Hello! So sorry. This recipe has been revised and is currently being updated. But the recipe card is the new and improved recipe to follow. No water or honey.
Thanks for this recipe. Made this last night for my inlaws and everyone loved it.
Aw I am so glad! Thank you!
I followed this recipe to the letter, but it is so salty. What can I do?
Hi Polly, I am so sorry! You could dilute with water, use less soy sauce or increase the brown sugar to make it sweeter.
Also, I recommend using a low sodium soy sauce.
Use coconut aminos. We never use soy sauce and itโs definitely works
This was soooo good! And easy to make! My fiance requested I make it every night! ?
I was wondering if you did not add the water, or as much water, if the sauce would come out thicker that way? I used half the water and it was thin still but I just threw it in a sauce pan at the end to thicken it and it worked out just as fine.
Thank you so much Tiffany! What a compliment from them hubby!! I haven’t tested it without the water. I usually always transfer the sauce to a saucepan to get more heat to it and thicken with cornstarch so it resembles a teriyaki sauce or glaze. Glad you both enjoyed! – Tawnie
Love how these steak bites turned out! Super quick, easy, and delicious meal!
