This blood orange margarita is undeniably good and like most cocktail recipes, crazy simple to make!

It seems like a no-brainer, but the key to a tasty margarita is using fresh, quality ingredients. Fresh citrus is essential to mastering the most delicious margarita each time, and quality ingredients such as Cointreau for the orange liqueur are also key.

This blood orange margarita is special because of its gorgeous ruby-red color, perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors, and versatility.

Whether you enjoy it on the rocks or frozen, adjust the sweetness, tartness, and alcohol content to create a margarita that suits your taste buds perfectly.

What you’ll need:

  • Blood Oranges & Navel Oranges: I like combining both oranges, but feel free to use all blood orange juice. And remember—freshly squeezed is best!
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is essential for balancing the sweetness of the orange liqueur and blood orange juice. It provides a bright, tangy acidity that adds depth and complexity to the margarita.
  • Orange liqueur: adds sweetness and depth to the margarita. I prefer Cointreau, but other common choices include triple sec or Grand Marnier.
  • Tequila: is the foundation of a margarita! The best tequila to use depends on preference, but most people like 100% Blue agave tequila, Blanco/Silver Tequila, or reposado.
  • Simple syrup: this adds sweetness to the cocktail. You can also use agave nectar. Adjust the amount based on your preferences.
  • Ice: Ice is essential for chilling the margarita and diluting it slightly for the perfect balance of flavors. Use fresh, clean ice cubes for the best results.

Variations

  • Spicy Blood Orange Margarita: Muddle a few jalapeño pepper slices in the shaker with the other ingredients before shaking and garnish with more jalapeño, too!
  • Sparkling Blood Orange Margarita: To add a bubbly twist, top your blood orange margarita with sparkling water or champagne. This adds a light and refreshing element to the cocktail, making it perfect for brunches, celebrations, or any occasion that calls for a little extra sparkle.
  • Frozen Blood Orange Margarita: Turn your blood orange margarita into a frozen treat by blending the ingredients with ice until smooth and slushy. The icy texture adds a refreshing element to the cocktail, perfect for sipping on hot summer days.
