If you love my Classic Apple Crisp but want a quicker version or simply aren’t baking for a crowd, this Single Serve Apple Crisp is for you! It has all of the cozy fall flavors you love like tender cinnamon-spiced apples, a buttery oat crumble, and plenty of warm, sweet goodness, but is scaled down to make just one serving.

It’s perfect for those nights when you want a little something sweet after dinner without having to make a whole big dish. The apple filling and crisp topping come together quickly, and everything bakes in one small dish for an easy dessert with very little cleanup.

I love to serve this apple crisp warm, straight from the oven, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or just enjoy it as-is. Honestly, there’s no wrong way to enjoy it!

Ingredient Notes

  • All-purpose flour: Make sure you’re using the spoon and level method to measure your flour when baking.
  • Old-fashioned oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats are my preference for this crisp. They give just the right amount of chew while also baking quickly. You could also use quick oats, but they will have a slightly different texture. I don’t recommend using steel-cut oats for this recipe.
  • Apples: I used a medium Honeycrisp apple. Just make sure to use crisp apples that stand up well to heat.
  • Unsalted butter: The butter gets melted (so no need to soften first) and stirred right into the crumble topping, making it extra buttery and delicious.
  • Pecans: I love adding a few chopped pecans into the crumble topping for a little extra crunch!

Expert Tips

  • Cut apples evenly: Cut your apples into even-sized pieces so they bake evenly and you don’t end up with some crunchy bites and some mushy ones.
  • Chill the topping: If you have a few extra minutes (or want to prepare in advance) let the oat topping chill in the refrigerator. This helps the flavors come together and helps it to get crispy in the oven.
  • Browning too quickly: If you notice your topping starts to brown too quickly, cover with foil so that you can continue to cook until the apples are tender and soft.
  • Serve warm with ice cream: Apple crisp is at its best right out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (or a drizzle of caramel sauce).

Variations / Substitutions

  • Use a mix of apples: Use a mix of tart and sweet apples (like Granny Smith with Honeycrisp or Fuji) to give this crisp even more flavor and texture (honestly this recipe is great for using up any crisp apples you have on hand!).
  • Different fruits: Swap some of the apples with pears, peaches, or berries for a twist on the classic dessert.
  • Gluten-free: Use certified gluten-free oats and substitute a 1:1 gluten-free flour to make this crisp gluten-free.
  • Nutty topping: Swap the pecans for walnuts or almonds if you prefer.

Storage / Freezing

  • Storage: This single serve apple crisp is best enjoyed fresh, but if you have any leftover you can cover the apple crisp and store it at room temperature for 1 day, or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm in the microwave, or reheat in a 350°F oven until warmed through and the topping is crisp again.
