It is true, men do have an advantage when it comes to weight loss. It becomes difficult when a married couple tries to go on a diet together and the women gets frustrated as she notices her husband shedding pounds more quickly than herself. So what’s the deal?
There are several reasons why men tend to drop Lbs fast. First, men are prone to build more muscle than women due to their testosterone levels. Since they have more lean muscle mass, their resting metabolism is higher…which means they burn calories at a faster rate. The muscle mass also means men burn more calories during physical activity. (Lucky for them, right ladies?!)
Secondly, the idea of weight loss for men and women is pretty different. Men view weight loss as a way to improve their health and fitness while many women just want a better number on the scale. Men are not necessarily focused on that bathroom scale, but a loose waistband and strength is enough to motivate them. Being a woman, I understand the frustration!! For example, when P90X was popular, my brother and I started the program together. By the end of it, we both lost weight and looked great…but he lost significantly more weight than I. Point proven, haha. Anyways, I think a lot of women lose confidence in themselves when they don’t see fast changes or rapid weight loss. You can’t workout 4 days in a row and expect to have a new body. It takes time, patience, focus, and…a healthy diet or course. 🙂
For the women reading this, you can’t change your biology but you can do other things to reach your weight loss goal. If you want to lose weight more quickly, you can boost your metabolism by increasing your muscle mass. This does not mean you have to get big and bulky like a guy, but incorporate weight lifting into your workout routine. Walking on the treadmill on incline is not doing your metabolism any good, unless maybe it’s your cool down. Grab some dumbbells! 😉 Secondly women tend to crave food with little or no prep work like bread or chocolate…foods that are easily accessible and easy to ‘pig out’ on. Women like to turn to foods because let’s be honest – we’re emotional! We like to eat out of boredom, depression, anxiety, anger, and even happiness. To help curb these cravings, listen to your body before grabbing a slice of bread. Ask yourself if you’re doing this because you’re stressed, or if you’re actually hungry. Be mindful about your body and the foods you consume.
I think that at the end of the day…dropping weight is hard work for ANY gender. Ladies, just because men tend to lose weight faster does not mean you can’t catch up. Any one can lose weight as long as you are committed to it. STAY CONFIDENT! 🙂
